Navigating “The 7 Cs of Parenting”: 2) Competence

Parents spend years nurturing their children to be competent.  They devote their time, energy and love as their children grow from making their first sounds and taking their first steps - to watching them master the skills required for their special interests. Over time, when young people develop and master important skills, they feel competent.  This feeling can only be developed through experience.  This is how they learn to trust their own judgements.  When they face difficult situations in the future, they are more likely to make healthy, responsible choices. Make sure you communicate in a way that empowers your child to make healthy choices.  Let your child make “safe mistakes,” so they have opportunities to make corrections in their judgement.  This is how they learn to make responsible choices when they’re faced with difficult decisions.
