Free School Supplies for Thurston County Kids on Aug. 20

Have you ever faced having to choose between buying food and clothes or crayons, pens, scissors, paper and a notebook for your school-age child? Each year, many parents look at the brightly colored “Back to School” banners with dread as they face exactly these choices. The Little Red Schoolhouse Project was founded in response to this need. Every fall they send thousands of students back to school with basic school supplies, a backpack, new socks and underwear, and a clean coat.

Do you need help with supplies?

If your kids go to school in the Rainier or Yelm school district, or anywhere else in Thurston County, and if you are having trouble affording all of the items your child needs, then you qualify for this event. That’s all there is to it. No income verification is required, just show up on the 20th!

This year’s event is Thursday, Aug. 20, 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. at Komachin Middle School in Lacey. If you drive up from Rainier, it’s a straight shot up Rainier Road; Komachin is on the corner of College and Mullen. It’s on Intercity Transit bus route #64. It’s expected to be really hot that day, so please dress accordingly and bring water/sunscreen.

While supplies last, you will receive:

  • A new backpack
  • The school supplies for your child’s list
  •  A gently used coat or hoodie in good condition
  •  A pair of socks
  •  A pair of underwear

Other groups like TOGETHER! and the South Sound Reading Foundation will be on hand to give out other supplies, like free books, bookmarks, toothbrushes, and things like that. Supplies are limited so the earlier you come, the better. The DSHS mobile services van will also be there.

Do you want to help others get supplies?

What the Little Red Schoolhouse does isn’t easy. It costs over $100 to outfit one child these days. Thanks to generous donations, our cost is much lower (around $13), but we can only make this happen with help. We expect to serve 4,000 students this year! You can help by sending a donation (tax deductible) to Little Red Schoolhouse, PO Box 6302, Olympia WA 98507.

Little Red Schoolhouse is a partner project with Rainier Community Cares, as they’re both under the TOGETHER! umbrella.
