The 7 C's of Resilience

Navigating “The 7 Cs of Parenting” – Introduction

Raising resilient children doesn't happen by accident.  There are 7 qualities, all beginning with the letter "C," that children develop over time that builds their ability to be resilient. These 7 Cs of parenting were adapted from The Positive Youth Development movement.  Initially Rick Little and his colleagues at the International Youth Foundation named 4 Cs as key attributes of healthy youth development.  Later on they added a 5th essential characteristic.  Eventually, after more research, they added 2 more Cs to create “The 7 Cs:  The essential Building Blocks of Resilience For Parents.” First and foremost, they found that “Young people live up or down to expectations we set for them.  They need adults who believe in them unconditionally and hold them to the high expectations of being compassionate, generous and creative.” In the final analysis:  “What we do to model healthy resilience strategies for our children is more important ...
